Shanghai Cooperation Organization member countries oppose intention of Taiwan authorities to hold on March 22 a referendum on the island's joining the United Nations Organization. SCO has published the statement on March 17, China's International Radio informed.

The step would be contrary to the pertaining regulations of the UN bylaws. It is potent with aggravation of the situation in the Taiwan Strait and threatening regional stability, well-being and security of millions of people, SCO emphasizes in the statement.

SCO member countries, confirming that Taiwan is China's inalienable part, consistently support position of the People's Republic of China on the Taiwan issue, decisively oppose Taiwan's independence in any form, and consider attempts to promote its joining the UNO and other international organizations counter-productive and dangerous, the statement reads.
