Russia is trying to preserve the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) to establish a new empire, chair of the committee for foreign relations of the Georgian parliament Kote Gabashvili told reporters commenting on Moscow’s intention to establish a special agency for CIS affairs in the new government.

The initiative was proposed by new Russian prime minister Vladimir Putin. According to him, the new agency will be subordinate to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and will establish close ties with the CIS member countries. “Establishment of the agency is not a big deal for Georgia, as our staying at the organization is closing to its end,” Gabashvili said.

In his turn, political analyst and former Georgian ambassador to Russia Zurab Abashidze believes that new Russian President Dmitry Medevedev is searching for ways of “extending ties with the CIS.” “It yet too early to state that such initiative will be able to inspire a new life in the CIS,” he said.
