Georgia’s Central Election Commission expects presidential election fully prepared

The Georgian Central Election Commission announced it is fully prepared for the January 5 presidential election. As the chair of the Central Election Commission (CEC) Irakli Porchkhidze announced at a news conference, a record high number of observers, both local and international, as well as media representatives have registered for the election. According to him, a media center was organized at the CEC, where news conferences will be held every hour in Georgian and English on the voting day.
Irakli Porchkhidze stressed that none of the presidential contenders registered by the CEC sent an appeal for withdrawal of their candidatures within set date – till 12:00 on January 4, so seven people will be running for presidency. They are candidate from the united opposition Levan Gachechiladze, businessman Arkady (Badri) Patarkatsishvili, leader of the New Rights Party David Gamkrelidze, leader of the Labor Party Shalva Natelashvili, leader of the United National Movement Party Mikhail Saakashvili, leader of the Party of Future Giorgi Maisashvili and leader of Imedi Party Irina Sarishvili.
According to the CEC by January 4, the total number of eligible voters is 3,352,448 people. The number includes 27,210 Georgian citizens living abroad and registered at consulates.
