It is too early to say that Medvedev would become new Russia’s president – opinion

It is in no way appropriate to state now that Dmitry Medvedev would become new Russia’s president even taking into account the support voiced for his candidature by President Vladimir Putin, senior researcher of the Institute of Sociology of the Russian Academy of Sciences Alexander Prudnik told a REGNUM correspondent.
He said he is sure that in the near future a new election strategy will be applied in Russia, when two or three candidates will be proposed, who are equally acceptable for both Putin and the Russian elite. All those contenders will be necessarily supported by Putin, who won’t back a single candidature to reserve to himself an opportunity for political maneuvering and remain acting president till the end instead of being a lame duck. He will rule the situation till the end and keep the elite in strain.
At the same time, there will be an illusion of democracy in the eyes of Western powers and inside the country.
Besides, such situation will allow winning votes from the opposition candidates. The situation will resemble the one that took place during the parliamentary election campaign. As he put it: Pro-presidential parties snatched votes from the opposition and we see now what the Communists received. What would they have got, if there were no Just Russia?
As REGNUM reported earlier today, four Russian parties, including United Russia, Just Russia, the Agrarian Party and the Civil Force, proposed Dmitry Medvedev as their common presidential contender. Vladimir Putin announced he fully backed the candidature.
