Japanese companies are examining a possibility of delivering component parts to their plants in Russia through seaports of Nakhodka (Primorye Territory). As the press service of Nakhodka administration informed a REGNUM correspondent on March, 4, the issue was discussed at a meeting of the head of Nakhodka City administration Oleg Kolyadin and his first deputy Boris Gladkikh with representatives of the Japan Association for Trade with Russia (ROTOBO).

The ROTOBO delegation paid an official visit to Primorye Territory. In Nakhodka, they were interested in the condition of the seaport and railway infrastructure and prospects of developing the transportation hub.

According to Takafumi Nakai, a senior expert of the ROTOBO Research Institute, the Japan-Russia investment cooperation has been maintaining positive dynamics within last years. According to the representative of ROTOBO, the amount of Japanese capital investment in the Russian economy increased from $50 billion in 2002 to $210 billion dollars in 2007. The largest investment projects are implemented by Toyota, Nissan, Suzuki companies in Saint Petersburg, another one is done by Isuzu Company in Tatarstan.

Further development of the plants depends directly on the capability of ports in western Russia to ensure trans-shipment of the component parts from Japan to Russia. According to Takafumi Naka,i the capability of St. Petersburg ports are at the breaking point. That is why Japan considers the possibility of guiding the freight flow from the western to the eastern direction, particularly, to Nakhodka, from which the components will be delivered by the Trans-Siberian Railway to the points of their destination.

In this connection, the head of Nakhodka Oleg Kolyadin told about prospects of developing Vostochnyi port (Nakhodka), the biggest one in Russia, and the growth of goods turnover, including the supposed establishment of a special economic zone on its base. The ROTOBO delegation was informed about other scaled projects in Nachodka, implementation of which has already been started or is expected to be in the near future. The projects include building of a special oil seaport in the Kozmino bay (the terminal point of the Eastern Siberia – Pacific Ocean oil pipeline), an oil refinery and other plants. Oleg Kolyadin ensured Japan visitors the local authorities are eager to do their best to establish closer economic and trade relations between the two countries.
