Kazakhstani politician: Withdrawal from embargo against Abkhazia should be discussed at CIS summit

Russian
proposal to CIS member states to withdraw from the regime of
sanctions against Abkhazia should be discussed at a CIS summit.
Chairman of Ak Zhol Democratic Party of Kazakhstan Alikhan
Baimenov expressed this opinion to REGNUM correspondent on March 11th.
“I suppose
that the initiative should be first discussed by presidents during
bilateral consultations and then introduced at a summit of CIS
foreign ministers or CIS heads of government or CIS heads of state,
since the decision to impose the embargo
was made at the level
of heads of CIS States at that time. Thus
I consider that it is in the interests of the CIS to take a
collective decision,” the party leader said.
As it was reported earlier, on March
6, Russian MFA addressed to the CIS Executive Committee an official
note, which read that Russian Federation did not any longer consider
itself bound by regulations of the Decision of the CIS Heads of State
Council “On Measures to Settle the conflict in Abkhazia, Georgia,”
of January 19, 1996. The Decision set a ban on trade, economic,
financial, transport and other links with Abkhazia on the state
level. Russian foreign ministry proposed to CIS
member states to “undertake analogous steps and withdraw from the
regime of restrictions against Abkhazia, established in 1996.”
