According to the Russian legislation, presidential contenders from political parties have to submit documents to the Central Election Committee no later than Dec 23 2007; the deadline for independent candidates is Dec 18.

As of Dec 7 2007, about their presidential ambitions announced: leader of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDPR) Vladimir Zhirinovsky, Communist Party (CPRF) Gennady Zyuganov, leader of Yabloko Grigory Yavlinsky, member of the Union of Right Forces (SPS) Boris Nemtsov, leader of the United Civil Front Garry Kasparov, former Soviet dissident Vladimir Bukovsky, leader of the People’s Democratic Union Mikhail Kasyanov, leader of the SPSU Oleg Shenin, former deputy of the State Duma of the 4th convocation Nikolay Kuryanovitch.

The United Russia Party has yet to propose its candidate at a party congress.

The Fair Russia Party is not going to propose a candidate for the presidential election but may support some other contender. The candidacy is to be chosen at a central party council Dec 22.

A political party other than one of those who made it to the new Duma can only propose one candidate. The candidate is elected by a secret vote. Representatives of most party regional branches must be present at the ballot. Then 2 million voters’ signatures have to be collected to support the candidate.

A self-nominated candidate has to submit lists of two million signatures collected in his/her support and correctly-filled forms specified by the law on the presidential election in the Russian Federation. In order to propose a presidential candidate on one’s own initiative, one will have to create an initiative group of 500 citizens of the Russian Federation enjoying an active election right. They will have to nominate a candidate at the group’s meeting.

Signature of each member of the citizens’ meeting proposing a candidate has to be verified by a notary public, who will also need to confirm the very fact of the meeting having been held. Information on incomes and property has to be submitted to the CEC not only for the candidate but also for his/her spouse, for the four years preceding the election. The information is a subject to publication in media.

The candidates’ list has to be completed by Jan 27 2008.
