The fact that the United Russia Party led by Russia’s President Vladimir Putin managed to receive constitutional majority of votes at Russian State Duma election even without partnering with other political forces has revealed a high level of popular support to the President, prominent Ukrainian political analyst, Director of the Center for Political and Conflict Research Mikhail Pogrebinsky commented on Dec 3 to REGNUM correspondent on yesterday’s election results in Russia.

According to Pogrebinsky, thanks to the vote, Putin has received a wider choice of options to control the situation in the country. “It is exactly thanks to Vladimir Putin that United Russia has received such a high result; hence he is going to control the Duma, which is a step forward a system in which the parliament will not only be a representative body, but also be able to influence executive power by adopting legislation and amending the Constitution,” the expert said.

Future relations between Ukraine and Russia depend on the policy that Ukraine will adopt. “Relations between our countries depend not on internal Russian status quo, but on internal Ukrainian one. In Russia, there is a consensus that economic support of countries that pursue anti-Russian policies is not in the interests of the Russian Federation. So everything will depend on who becomes minister of foreign affairs, and if the process of Ukraine’s joining NATO is furthered. Hardly anyone is to alter Russian foreign policy course, determined by Putin and upheld by both his backers and opponents,” Pogrebinsky concluded.
