Rice and Gates arrive to Moscow to negotiate on ballistic missile defense

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Secretary of Defense Robert Gates have arrived in Moscow March 17. Tomorrow, they will negotiate in the “two plus two” format with Russian counterparts Sergei Lavrov and Anatoliy Serdiukov.

It is expected that the sides will focus on the prospects of deployment in Poland and Czech Republic elements of US ballistic missile defense, as well as on signing a new agreement instead the Strategic Nuclear Forces Agreement (SNF-1) that is to expire in 2009. On March 17, Rice and Gates are to meet with the head of state Vladimir Putin and president-elect Dmitry Medvedev.

As it is universally realized, the current meeting is another attempt to reach understanding in the controversial and complicated issue of the bilateral dialog, REGNUM quotes RTR to remind.
