Russia’s Ambassador to Georgia Vyacheslav Kovalenko announced after his meeting with the Georgian Laborites that Russia wishes to improve the relations with Georgia and expects detailed proposals in the field, a REGNUM correspondent informs. “Russia wishes to improve the relations with Georgia and expects detailed proposals, because we heard many statements in the past; but real impulses are needed,” Vyacheslav Kovalenko said commenting on a statement by presidential contender Mikhail Saakashvili about his intention in case he is re-elected for the second term to start the relations with Russia “afresh.”

“Maybe we should not start ‘afresh,’ because we have a centuries-long history of relations between the Georgian and the Russian nations and they have always been warm and close,” the Russian ambassador said. “Our countries must have such relations when no danger threatens from each other’s territory,” the ambassador said stressing that “trust must be restored” first of all. “I know attitudes of the Georgian people who treat the Russians kindly and I believe that we are up to solve the problems. But we need a signal from Tbilisi for it,” the Russian ambassador said noting that his meeting with leaders of the Labor Party was also aimed at making the nations closer, because “the Laborites are an influential force in Georgia and disposed to improve the relations with Russia.”
