Russian president dismisses Roman Abramovich as Chukotka governor

Following a request for resignation sent by Chukotka Autonomous District Governor Roman Abramovich and in accordance with the Russian law of October 6, 1999, “On general principles of organization of legislative (representative) and executive bodies of governance in the subjects of the Russian Federation,” Russia’s President Dmitry Medvedev accepted resignation of the Chukotka governor.
Roman Kopin is appointed as acting governor of the district until a new governor assumes the duties, the Kremlin press office reports.
To remind, Roman Abramovich is a Russian tycoon, living in the UK, mostly known in the West for owning the Chelsea FC. He was elected as Chukotka Governor on December 24, 2000, and re-appointed by President Vladimir Putin in November, 2005. In the end of 2006, Abramovich applied for resignation saying he had fulfilled all his tasks in the region.
