As REGNUM reported earlier, in a joint declaration a on the results of presidential meeting of  Emomali Rakhmonov and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the Republic of Tajikistan expressed its confidence that the Islamic Republic of Iran might step-by-step join the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) as a full member. Tajikistan may successfully negotiate on the matters of Iran’s joining the SCO, said Tajik political analyst Faridun Hodizoda commenting on the fact to a REGNUM correspondent. “It’s worth reminding, it was Tajikistan that was one of initiators of accepting Uzbekistan to the SCO as a full member and it was at the summit in Dushanbe when Uzbekistan’s joining the SCO was registered,” the expert noted.

At the same time, according to Hodiozoda, it’s still unknown if the other SCO member-countries are ready to support Tajikistan’s aspirations to accept Iran into the organization. “If we base upon the bilateral relations, it’s worth mentioning, they are good. Actually, SCO members are not supposed to have objections against admission of Iran to the SCO. It’s enough to say that Iran has very good relations with Russia and China. But on the other hand, these countries think about consequences of Iran’s admission to the organization. First of all, it’s related to the confrontation of the West with Iran. In case Iran is admitted to the SCO, this issue may ruin the reputation of the organization. Therefore, I think, Iran may hardly become a full member of the SCO soon. There are some other aspects. We must not forget about that Mongolia is the first candidate to join the SCO, and only after that we can speak about certain steps towards Iran’s admission to the organization,” the analyst believes.

Meanwhile, answering a question if Tajikistan’s aspiration to assist Iran to join SCO is in some sort a gratitude for the large-scaled aid of the country in overcoming the current energy crisis in Tajikistan, Hodizoda noted that “the point is, of course, taking place.” “But on the other hand, for the last years, the leaders of Iran and Tajikistan have been raising the issue of Iran’s joining the SCO at all the summits. Tajikistan was constantly showing his interest in admission of Iran to the SCO. This year the next summit of the SCO member-states is to take place in Dushanbe, and Tajikistan will have an opportunity to raise the issue again. But I don’t think that the other member-countries may accept the proposal of Tajikistan, because the organization will get more politically driven in case of admission of Iran to the SCO, which is not desirable for the other member-countries. And Iran needs membership to the SCO, because it feels itself isolated in some way,” Faridun Hodizoda said to the REGNUM correspondent.
