A law on ratification of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages passed by Ukraine in 2003 is planned to be revised. The announcement was made by Ukraine’s Deputy Justice Minister Valeria Lutkovskaya, while meeting a delegation of experts of the Committee of Experts of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages, a REGNUM correspondent informs on May 29 citing the Justice Ministry.
“It is planned to correct linguistic mistakes in the current law, particularly, regarding names of the languages mentioned in the Charter. Besides, it is planned to resolve the problem of the imperfect translation of the Charter, which will allow avoiding problems that can appear caused by the incorrect interpretation of the document in Ukrainian,” Lutkovskaya said. According to her, such a draft law was approved by related agencies and is to be submitted to the parliament by the Ukrainian president.
Ukraine signed the Charter on May 2, 1996. The law on its ratification was passed on May 15, 2003. It was provisions of the law grounding on which Russian was given the status of a regional language in some regions in southwestern Ukraine, which made it possible to use the language to full extent along with the state language. Some experts are concerned that the true aim of revising the law about ratification of the Charter for Regional or Minority Languages is to prevent from treating Russian in Ukraine as a regional or minority language.
