Yushchenko: Ukraine is losing its status of sea power
Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko has stated that there is a real threat of Ukraine losing its status as sea power. He made the announcement today, on May 16, during a session of the National Security Council, a REGNUM correspondent informs.
“In its time, Ukraine had almost a third of the former Soviet Union trade fleet in terms of tonnage. However, now volumes of goods shipped by the Ukrainian fleet comparing to 1990 reduced by almost six times, of passengers by 2.5 times. We have lost almost the whole fleet because of the irresponsible policy,” the president noted. In the context of his statement he posed a task for the government, ministries and governmental agencies to improve the situation and called to focus upon constructive proposals on how to restore the sea power of Ukraine.
